OUT! Bowled. Lockie Ferguson to Lasith Malinga. Full toss, off stump backing away Steer, missed to. Cleaned him up, Malinga is no match for the ferocious Ferguson and the stumps are in tatters just like this Sri Lankan innings.

That was a sensational bowling and fielding display by New Zealand to kick-start their World Cup campaign in style. Matt Henry got things rolling with an incisive new ball spell, before Lockie Ferguson ripped through the middle order with some eye-catching pace. Dimuth Karunaratne did his best to hold things together for Sri Lanka with a stoic half century, however he was mostly powerless as the carnage unfolded at the other end. 137 should be a simple target for the Black Caps but strange things can happen with the added pressure of a World Cup and a global audience watching on.

  • 29.1

APPEAL! Lockie Ferguson to Dimuth Karunaratne. Short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep square leg for 1 run, by Santner, appeal made for Caught. Almost a stunning grab to complete the innings. Santner had to sprint and put in a full length dive and it seemed as though his fingers were underneath the ball at first, however the third umpire spots that the ball was touching the ground.

OUT! Caught. Trent Boult to Suranga Lakmal. Short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, by Santner. Boult gets himself a wicket to leave Sri Lanka on the verge of being bowled out. Lakmal got in an ugly tangle against a well directed bouncer and could only awkwardly spoon the ball into the offside. Santner accepts the dolly of a catch, the Black Caps are bossing this contest.

A clinical New Zealand performance has seen them trounce an abject Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cardiff. Martin Guptill (73*) and Colin Munro (58*) made light work of the target with a pair of aggressive fifties, taking the Kiwis home with more than 33 overs to spare. Sri Lanka found the edge fairly regularly but couldn't build any pressure with the luck going against them and a small total on the board. In truth though they lost this match in the first innings, unable to withstand Matt Henry (3/29) and Lockie Ferguson (3/22) nipping the ball around at high pace. It was a mightily impressive display on a green surface and would have caused any team serious trouble. They were ably backed up by some superb catches and athletic ground fielding to keep Dimuth Karunaratne always on the back foot. The Sri Lankan skipper scrapped his way to an unbeaten half century, becoming just the second man to carry his bat in a World Cup match, however it was never going to be enough. He will be looking for a big improvement from his side for their next match against Afghanistan at this same ground on Tuesday. Kane Williamson will be content with a similar performance as they move to The Oval to face Bangladesh on Wednesday.
