Matthew Fisher was born on November 9, 1997, in York, England. Fisher made his professional debut for Yorkshire at just 15 years and 212 days old in a List A match against Leicestershire in June 2013, becoming the youngest post-war county cricketer. This record-breaking feat eclipsed a mark that had stood since 1922. He was included in an England Under-19 squad later that summer while still 15. In 2015, Fisher made his County Championship debut for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. His T20 Blast debut the same year was spectacular. He took 5 for 22 against Derbyshire at Headingley, making him only the third Yorkshire bowler to claim five wickets in a T20 match. However, Fisher's promising start was derailed by serious injury troubles. He tore his left hamstring three times in 2016, wiping out his entire season. Since his debut, Fisher has suffered side strains, a broken thumb, a dislocated shoulder, a back stress injury and recurrent hamstring problems. Despite the setbacks, his talent remained evident. After a solid 2021 season showcasing his ability to extract steepling bounce, he was rewarded with a call to the Lions tour to Australia. He was the standout bowle therer, earning a Test squad spot for the West Indies series in early 2022. He was given a last-minute debut in Barbados after Craig Overton was taken ill, and even claimed a wicket on the second ball. A stress fracture soon after his debut prevented him from building on that breakthrough. In August 2024, Yorkshire announced Fisher would leave the club, and he signed for Surrey on a three-year deal. The 2025 season proved transformative. In the title deciding clash against Nottinghamshire at The Oval in September 2025, Fisher claimed his maiden first-class 10-wicket haul. Though Surrey ultimately lost that thriller by 20 runs, Fisher's performance showcased his quality on the biggest stage. He was not picked in the Ashes squad, but as fate would have it, Fisher was called up as a replacement for the injured Mark Wood. He was already in Australia with the Lions when the call came.
