Advantage Welsh Fire? Ummm, looks like it. 138 is by no means a threatening score to chase. But for sure, they need to get out of the Powerplay untroubled and then push on. Welsh Fire bowlers mixed up their pace and lengths nicely, with a bit of uneven bounce off this surface working in their favour too. Every bowler picked up at least one wicket with Ferguson and Jansen leading with two apiece and Rachin Ravindra bowling a magnificent spell where he kept the batters on a leash. For the Phoenix to throw up any challenge, they will know that a strong start with the new ball is non-negotiable against a stacked-up Welsh Fire batting unit. Mix-ups maximising the troubles - Phoenix were reduced to 53/2 after both Smeed and Owen departed attempting to launch the innings. Clarke, though, was going great guns at the other end, until a piece of fielding brilliance from Cox cut his charge short. The late flourish did come through the lower order, who chipped in with precious runs, but still, they will feel they are 20-25 runs short here. They were below par against the Rockets in Cardiff and couldn't defend, losing by 9 wickets, but will hope that they do much better here.

Never really got going - That's how one would describe Birmingham Phoenix's innings. Actually, it's those small moments that didn't go their way that added up to their troubles. Those couple of run-outs in the middle phase literally sucked the life out of their innings. From a bowling pov, the hosts hunted in a pack and executed their plans really well. They would be very pleased to have restricted Phoenix to a below-par total on a very good batting track.

That, he adds, is the whole point of playing, and there's real satisfaction in being ruthless enough to close it out. On the bowlers laying the platform for the win, he agrees wholeheartedly, particularly through the back end of the innings. The message within the group, he shares, was to keep taking wickets and seize the chances as they came, knowing full well it's a fast scoring ground where pressure moments were always going to arrive. He feels the way they responded to that pressure made the difference. On Welsh Fire more broadly, Root points to the depth across different areas of the squad, with plenty of bases covered and a strong shared understanding of how they want to go about chasing totals.
