That was a really good effort by the tourists after winning the toss, now they will need a solid response with the bat. The Black Caps will be hopeful that Southee and Boult can make inroads this evening with conditions still overcast and helpful for bowling.

The edge flies quickly and Mendis clutches it with both hands above his head to boost the tourists at the end of the afternoon session. That's five wickets for Lakmal now, fully deserved because he has been fantastic.
What an extraordinary session of Test cricket that was. It felt like the game was being played at 100 miles per hour at times with Southee going hell for leather and wickets tumbling in clusters. BJ Watling has been stoic through it all but he doesn't have much company left for support this evening.

Oh my word, that is an astonishing catch by Gunathilaka to get the breakthrough for Sri Lanka. Southee got a big piece of this looking to clear mid wicket and must've thought it would rocket to the fence. Gunathilaka had other ideas, however, putting in an athletic jump before plucking it one-handed above his head. It's a really special moment to end Southee's swashbuckling innings, he was a few feet in the air when he got his hand on it and somehow it stuck. Southee is gutted but he's played a really useful knock for his side to rescue them from trouble.

Incredible from Trent Boult. He was been quite superb this morning with the swinging ball. Lahiru Kumara is all at sea as the ball curves back into him and he is trapped plumb in front. Boult started with zero wickets this morning and he ends with six within 45 minutes. Job done for New Zealand with the ball and now it is down to their batsmen to post a large total. Plenty of time left in the match so they can take as long as they like and not worry about dot balls. Perfect opportunity for Jeet Raval to find some form.

Colin de Grandhomme then had some fun at the end and he gave the Sri Lankan players the runaround. Plenty of batting for Sri Lanka to do if they are to win or even get the draw and after spending 153 overs in the field they will be very weary. New Zealand could nip a couple out tonight.

Just like that the match is over. After the grit and determination of yesterday it took just 12 minutes and 14 balls for New Zealand to wrap things up this morning. Conditions were more in their favour, but the visitors will be unhappy with how quickly they let things slip away. For New Zealand it's a deserved victory, there have been some good rearguard moments from Sri Lanka, but the hosts have dominated for more sessions and days and are well worth the 1-0 series win to round out 2018.
