  • England will be looking to record a third successive men's Test series win against Sri Lanka for the first time, following their seven-wicket victory in the series opener at this very venue in Galle.
  • Sri Lanka have lost their last three men's Tests in succession; the last time they compiled a longer losing run was a four-game span from December 2015 to May 2016.
  • England will be looking to win a fourth consecutive men's Test series (currently leading 1-0 in this iteration); the last time they enjoyed a longer winning run was a stretch of six series victories between 2010 and 2011.
  • England's men have the chance to win five successive overseas Test matches for the first time since 1914 (seven in a row between 1911 and 1914).
  • England have lost only one of their 10 men's Tests since the start of 2020 (W7, D2) and are undefeated in their last six of that stretch (W4, D2) - the last time they went on a longer unbeaten run was a 13-Test span (W7, D6) from November 2012 to August 2013.
  • Jack Leach (24) requires just two scalps in this match to become England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker in Sri Lanka (Ashley Giles, 25); he currently has the best average (29.1) of any spinner to bowl for England during the 21st Century (min. 5+ total career wickets).
  • Joe Root (England) comes into this game having posted a knock worth 228 last time out against Sri Lanka, his maiden Test double-century in Asia; he recorded 74 runs from conventional sweep shots in the series opener, almost twice the number of his previous high in a Test match (41 at Pallekele, v Sri Lanka in November 2018).
