Enough on the board? Only time will tell. M Silambarasan led the way with a three-wicket haul while the others chipped in at the death, and 192 is undoubtedly a challenging total to chase down. But with dew set to complicate matters for the bowlers in the second innings, the Super Gillies, boasting solid batting depth, will fancy their chances of getting there. The bowlers of Trichy have a big Powerplay to win if they are to win and climb to the top of the points table and almost confirm their playoff place. Back in a bit with the chase.
Shyam and Sanjay's rescue act - Several batters, Suresh Kumar and Jagatheesan Kousik among them, got starts and showed real intent to go aggressive, but neither could convert into a meaningful score as the Grand Cholas slipped to 64/3. Shyam Sundar held firm at one end, and alongside Sanjay Yadav, stitched together a crucial partnership through the middle overs. The duo effectively arrested the slide, pacing their 85-run stand smartly to swing the momentum back in Trichy's favor. Both Shyam and Sanjay brought up well-earned half-centuries, with Sanjay batting through to the end, and backed by handy contributions from the rest of the middle order, the Grand Cholas posted a competitive 191.
9.42 pm IST - Just 22 runs in the last three overs have prevented the Grand Cholas from crossing the 200-run mark. At one stage, when S Shyam Sundar and Sanjay Yadav were batting together, it looked like they would get far more than what they have on the board. The Super Gillies made a fine comeback towards the backend, and kept picking up wickets regularly.
OUT! TAKEN! Prem Kumar gets a wicket on the last ball of the innings. Trichy Grand Cholas finish on 191/7. Fuller in length and outside off, Sanjay Yadav tries to reach out for the big shot but ends up slicing it. It flies towards deep extra cover, where RS Mokit Hariharan moves to his left and takes a good catch.

Over and out - Another highly entertaining day ticks by in TNPL 2026. The Trichy Grand Cholas become the first team to qualify for the playoffs, and they lift themselves to the pole position. Now then, the final day of the league stage awaits on Saturday, 22nd August, with the last two league games still to come and three playoff spots still up for grabs. First up, the afternoon fixture sees defending champions IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans take on the Salem Spartans. That will be followed by a blockbuster clash as Nellai Royal Kings lock horns with Madurai Panthers. The first ball of the afternoon game will be bowled at 3.30 pm IST and will be followed by nonstop cricketing action through the evening. Late squeeze halted Cholas' charge - Just 22 runs in the final three overs kept Grand Cholas from crossing the 200 mark, a stark contrast to the middle overs when Shyam Sundar and Sanjay Yadav looked set to take the total well beyond that. The Super Gillies clawed their way back superbly in the death overs, picking up wickets at regular intervals to rein in the charge. Earlier, starts from Suresh Kumar and Jagatheesan Kousik promised aggression but yielded little, and the Grand Cholas slipped to 64/3 before Shyam Sundar and Sanjay Yadav came together to steady the ship with a crucial middle order stand. For the Super Gillies, M Silambarasan starred with a three-wicket haul and contributions rained through the death phase from the rest of the pack as well.
Doomed at death - At 124/2, with the chase looking well and truly under control, things could not have looked rosier for the Super Gillies. But N Selva Kumaran broke that dangerous stand, and with Aashiq departing soon after, Chepauk slipped to 134/4, suddenly left with two new batters in the middle and a sizable target still to chase as the required rate began climbing. Swapnil Singh and M. Mohana Prasath both possess the game to finish things off, but credit where due, the death bowling of Athisayaraj Davidson and impact player K Easwaran proved simply too hot to handle, and the wheels came off for the Super Gillies from there.
Fought bravely, but not enough - The Super Gillies endured an underwhelming Powerplay, managing just 48/2, and took a hammer blow early on when Jagadeesan fell cheaply. But K Aashiq picked up the baton of responsibility, standing tall under pressure and mixing calculated aggression to bring up a superb half century, keeping the flame alive for Chepauk. He and Ram Arvindh R stepped up to repair the damage at first and then started squeezing out big overs, forming an excellent recovery stand of 85 runs.
11.35 pm IST -The Cholas make it through - It was indeed a nervy contest with momentum swinging back and forth throughout, but the Grand Cholas held their nerve, thanks to spectacular execution from their death bowlers, K Easwaran and Athisayaraj Davidson, who choked the flow of runs when it mattered most in the closing stages. They have not only cemented their place into the playoffs, but have done so by knocking out the most successful team in TNPL history. Chepauk Super Gillies put up a real fight, but the four-time champions lost wickets at all the wrong junctures, and ultimately found themselves with too much left to do too late in the chase.
Done and dusted! Excellent death bowling display from K Easwaran. TRICHY GRAND CHOLAS WIN BY 14 RUNS! On a length, pitching outside leg, Dinesh swings hard with all his strength, only to miss out on connecting, and the ball strikes his front pad.
Angles it across the right-hander from around the stump. Full and outside off. Dinesh Raj S swings like a rusty gate and misses to connect as the ball zips through to the keeper.
FOUR! Just a few yards more and that would have sailed over the ropes. But that's the game for the Grand Cholas. On a good length, on off, a well-disguised slower ball. Dinesh clears his front leg and smashes it through extra cover, one bounce and away for four.
PLAY AND A MISS! Absolute gold from Easwaran. Bowls from a wider angle, and nails the yorker in at the batter's legs. Dinesh Raj S clears the front leg to launch it over mid-wicket, but gets nutmegged as the ball shoots through to the keeper.
A tricky pace on length ball, outside off, Ashwanth Valthapa tries to cut it through point but chops it off the inside edge. The ball rolls to the off side and they cross for a single.

Chepauk Super Gillies need 22 off the final over, a tall order by any measure. The Grand Cholas will believe they have done more than enough already to keep the opposition from getting there. K Easwaran (3-0-22-2) will wrap it up.
FOUR! R Rajkumar could have done a lot better there. But it is still a fantastic over from Davidson. Full and on off, Dinesh clears his front leg and muscles it up and over mid off. Long off gives chase to his left but overruns the ball, unable to get a hand on it.

Full and slow, outside off, Prasath gets on the front foot and hammers it aerially towards long off, but badly mistimes it and R Rajkumar is waiting in the deep to complete a regulation catch. Chepauk Super Gillies are 162/6 and the game is quickly slipping away from their reach.

OUT! CAUGHT IN THE DEEP! Big moment in the game. N Selva Kumaran's drop doesn't cost the Grand Cholas much here. Full and into the pads, a back-of-the-hand slower ball. Swapnil takes it on with a swipe across the line but loses the grip of his bottom hand and his shape with it, holing out to Sanjay Yadav at deep backward square. Sanjay has to crouch very low to scoop the ball but he does so cleanly. Chepauk Super Gillies are 161/5, needing 31 runs from 14 balls.

DROPPED! Twists and turns seem to have no end in this game. That could be a very costly drop by N Selva Kumaran. Slower delivery, full on the stumps. Swapnil Singh mistimes the lofted shot off the toe end of the bat. The ball sails towards deep mid-wicket but N Selva Kumaran overruns and perhaps fails to judge the ball's trajectory. He tries to pluck that with a reverse cup, but the ball bursts through his palms and drops behind him. Two runs taken.
