We are all set for Scotland's reply. Michael Jones has walked out in the middle with George Munsey to open for Scotland. Matthew Forde is set to bowl the first over of this chase.

  • .

    ... The Run Chase ...

  • .

Up for a quick chat - Shimron Hetmyer says the outing was a mix of good and bad. The good was being out in the middle and contributing, while the bad was just how hot it was out there. He jokes that it seemed like he was the only one really feeling the heat, adding that he even asked the umpires, who told him they did not feel it as much. He says the key for him is batting with a clear mind and being ready to cash in whenever the ball is there to be hit. He adds that everyone knows that the West Indies are a strong boundary-hitting side, but where they can fall short at times is in managing singles and dot balls, and that is something they are keen to improve by limiting the number of dots.

  • .

Hetmyer's swashbuckling knock - Hetmyer was at his brutal best, racing to a 22-ball fifty and setting a new record as the fastest West Indian to reach the mark in a T20 World Cup. Powell eventually fell when Currie snapped the partnership, but by then the rescue job was done and the stage was set perfectly for a big finish. Sherfane Rutherford came out swinging and through his cameo of 26 runs, he ensured that the scoring never dipped. Scotland couldn't string wickets regularly in that middle phase and their bowlers were taken apart. Brad Currie was the only one with an economy of under 6. It would require a strong start for Scotland to scale down this target against a West Indian bowling attack that has quality aplenty. Should be an interesting chase ahead. Stay tuned.

  • .

A solid resurrection in the middle overs - Shimron Hetmyer may have touched down in India late, but he made sure no one missed his arrival. Walking in with West Indies wobbling, he joined forces with Rovman Powell and completely changed the tone of the innings. Their counterpunching stand of 81 dragged the Men in Maroon out of trouble and turned the middle overs into a scoring spree, with 105 runs hammered between overs 7 and 15.

  • .

A cagey start, no freebies early - Scotland showed a lot of discipline with the new ball and didn't allow any sort of freedom for the West Indian openers to tee off from the outset. Hope and King played a few ambitious strokes, but were rather watchful in the Powerplay. Scots didn't get any wickets during the field restrictions as West Indies crawled to 33/0 in the first six. In an attempt to accelerate, both the openers were dismissed in quick time, which pushed West Indies for another rebuild with 66/2 on the board at halfway.

  • .

A strong finish in the end - West Indies were barely ticking at a run a ball through the first half, but the backend told a very different story as they blasted 116 runs in the last ten overs. Scotland did claw back a bit of control at the death, conceding just 15 runs across the last two, but the damage had already been done. From a sluggish start to a commanding finish, West Indies still ended up with a hefty total on the board and would be the happier of the two sides walking back in the dugout.

  • 19.6

A dot to end the innings! Superb final over from Brad Currie. Brad goes into the surface, outside off. Romario Shepherd does not pick the slower one and swings way too early. The ball sneaks under his blade and Matthew Cross manages to get his body behind the ball. Just 7 runs off the last over. 15 off the last 2. West Indies finish with 182 on the board!

  • 19.5

SIX! One hand comes off the handle, but it does not matter. Romario Shepherd's power takes it over the ropes. Cross-seam delivery, Currie goes searching for the yorker. It comes out as a low full toss, on off. Romario swings through the line. The ball catches the toe end of the blade but it clears the straight boundary. The long on and long off fielders got around but only watched it sailed over the fence.

  • 19.4

Nicely bowled! Currie keeps it away from the batter's hitting arc, on a good length, flirting with the tramline. Romario Shepherd clears the front leg and gives it a heave but the ball goes over his blade. Matthew Cross, standing up to the stumps, manages to make the stop.

  • 19.3

Low full toss, on middle, Matthew swings hard again but only gets the height. It is mistimed and the ball drops in the vacant mid on region. They cross.

  • 19.2

A big swing and a miss! Sticks to the off-pace delivery, does Currie, on a good length, angling away. Matthew Forde swings for the hills but is early into the shot and fails to connect. 2 wickets and just 8 runs in the last 8 balls.

  • .

Another one bites the dust. Matthew Forde is the new batter in. Five balls to go...

  • 19.1
Sherfane Rutherford c Michael Jones b Brad Currie 26 (13)

OUT! CAUGHT! Back-to-back wickets for Scotland. Currie does not offer any pace, on a back of a length, outside off, Rutherford stays on the back foot and has a big swing at it. Neither does he get the elevation, nor is it wide enough of the fielder in the deep. Hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep cover, where Michael Jones makes no mistake. A handy 26 off 13 for Rutherford. West Indies are now 175/5.

  • .

Final over coming up. Brad Currie (3-0-16-1) to wrap up. Romario Shepherd walks in at number 6.

  • 18.6

OUT! TAKEN! Brilliant grab by Brandon McMullen. Sharif goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a high full toss, outside off. Hetmyer shuffles across to get closer to the line of the ball. He smears it aerially towards wide long on, where McMullen moves to his left and slides to take the catch. Brandon reaches out with his hands. The ball threatens to pop out of his left hand, but he just about manages to cling on. End of an impactful knock from Hetmyer, 64 runs off 36 balls.

  • .

Is that a clean catch by McMullen? Oh, hang on, the on-umpires look satisfied with the catch, but they are actually checking for the legality of the delivery. The side-on replay comes up and the third umpire confirms that the ball is dipping below the waist height of the batter.

  • 18.5

Lowish full toss, on off. Sherfane Rutherford swings to go down the ground. Gets it right off the toe end of the blade and it dribbles to long off for just a single.

  • 18.4

FOUR! Skilful shot! Sharif nails the yorker, right in the blochkole, around off. Rutherford hurriedly gets his bat down and slices it with an open bat face wide of deep backward point for a four.

  • 18.3

Off-cutter, running across, on a length, Shimron reaches out and thumps it over cover. It is mopped up by the fielder in the deep. Just a single.

  • 18.2

Full and straight, on middle. Shimron swings early and toe-ends it back to the bowler.

  • 18.1

Sharif tries to push it across the left-hander. It comes out as a low full toss, outside off. Hetmyer walks across the stumps and drags it to the right of deep mid-wicket. The fielder in the deep slides to his right and cuts it off. Two runs taken.

  • .

Safyaan Sharif will bowl the 19th. 3-0-38-0 so far. Can West Indies go past 190? Well, if these two keep batting till the end, even 200 is a possibility.

  • 17.6

Shorter and going across, Hetmyer flashes hard but chops it down in front of cover for one.

  • 17.5

Floated up, on leg, flicked through mid-wicket for one.

  • 17.4

SIX! Wow! What a hit. Watt switches to over the wicket and tries to get the yorker in. He misses his mark by a small margin and that is enough for Rutherford to get under the ball. Sherfane slams it over wide long off for a biggie.

  • 17.3

Half a shout for LBW but turned down! No real excitement from any of the Scottish players but they want to take a chance with the review. Slower and fuller, on middle, Rutherford gets down on a knee for the slog sweep but the ball goes past the inside edge and hits him on the back thigh. The UltraEdge shows a spike, confirming the inside edge. Scotland lose their review.

  • 17.2

FOUR! Nicely done! Short and pushed across off, Rutherford extends his hands, waits for the ball to arrive and cuts it behind point for a boundary.

  • 17.1

Searing yorker, at the toes. Hettie digs it out to long on for a single.

  • 16.6

FOUR! Beautiful! Sliding on with the arm from around the wicket, full and on middle. Sherfane makes a bit of room, opens up the front hip and goes inside out over cover for four more. 14 runs off the over!

  • .

The Stage Is Set for the Next Showdown - That wraps up this Group C fixture, where West Indies collect the two points, while late entrants Scotland will have to wait a little longer for their first win of the tournament. Two matches are now done, but one big showdown is still to come, with co-hosts India beginning their World Cup campaign against USA at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That one gets underway very soon, so switch tabs and stay with us for all the coverage from what promises to be a cracking contest. Cheers!

  • .

The victorious skipper of West Indies - Shai Hope is pleased with the team's winning start, acknowledging there's no margin for error in the tournament. He feels they could have scored a bit more at the halfway stage, considering the par score is around 190. Hope is happy with the team's performance, particularly Shimron Hetmyer, who's batting well and scoring runs. He shifted Hetmyer to number 3 to make the batting side more dangerous, given that the opponents have many left-arm bowlers. Hope is also delighted with Romario's milestones, saying it's great to see him perform and pick crucial wickets, including the hat-trick in T20Is.

  • .

The captain of Scotland - Richie Berrington is disappointed with Scotland's finish, despite being confident of chasing the target after the first innings, thanks to their batting depth. He believes the decision to bowl first was part of the team's strategy to be ready for both batting and bowling. Berrington praises the team's positive mindset and feels they bowled well initially, but Hetmyer's knock turned the game around. Losing key batters like Bruce and himself changed the momentum. Despite the loss, he sees many positives and feels the team gained valuable experience in the Eden Gardens conditions.

    Presentation Time...

  • .

Shepherd steals the show - It was not a perfect bowling performance from West Indies, but they will happily take it in an opening game, even though there is room for improvement in the field. Many expected Akeal Hosein to take the new ball, but Rovman Powell went with an all-pace attack and it paid off as they struck three times in the Powerplay, including a stunning catch from Hetmyer. Motie was excellent through the middle overs, giving nothing away and picking up a wicket, while Holder finished with three. But it was Romario Shepherd who stole the show, producing a superb hat-trick and ending with a five-wicket haul that will be remembered for a long time.

  • .

Caribbean batting blitz overwhelms Scotland - Earlier in the game, after a sluggish start from the West Indies openers, Shimron Hetmyer exploded alongside Rovman Powell, with the pair adding 81 off just 37 balls to seize control. Hetmyer finished with a scintillating 64 off 36, including a 22-ball half-century, the fastest by a West Indies batter in a T20 World Cup, while Sherfane Rutherford’s late hitting pushed the total to daunting heights. Scotland began well and closed strongly, but it was the middle overs where they lost their grip as the runs kept flowing. Currie was the pick of the bowlers, and debutant Oliver Davidson impressed with a wicket and an economical spell, but despite taking a scalp each, Safyaan Sharif and Michael Leask went for too many.

  • .

Scotland’s middle-order meltdown - Scotland made a sedate start, and losing three wickets in the Powerplay immediately put them on the back foot. The 78-run stand between Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce dragged them back into the contest as they smashed 53 runs in 4 overs to swing the momentum, but once Berrington was dismissed, everything unraveled. They lost their composure, went searching for big hits, and a four-wicket over sealed their fate. From a promising 115/3, Scotland were bundled out for 147, a collapse that will sting for quite some time.

  • .

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Shimron Hetmyer is presented with the award for his knock of 64 off 36 and a stunning catch. He attributes his success to both an explosive batting performance and a brilliant catch, though he admits the catch brought him more satisfaction due to his recent dedication to improving his fielding. While he does not consider it his absolute best, he ranks the grab high on his list of achievements. Adopting a forward-thinking mindset, Hetmyer remarks that everything happens for a reason, choosing to focus on future contributions. Whether setting or chasing totals, rather than dwelling on past misses. He expresses a preference for batting at number 3 in T20s, noting that the position offers him the freedom to attack early rather than managing the pressure of finishing. Despite jokingly suggesting his teammate Romario Shepherd deserved the award for his hat-trick and five-wicket haul, Hetmyer emphasizes that the team's victory was the primary goal and reiterates their commitment to consistent execution in upcoming matches.

  • .

Men in Maroon start in style - West Indies kickstart their World Cup campaign with a fantastic win, and while the scorecard may suggest they were dominant, Scotland gave a strong account of themselves and fought hard. In the end, though, they were undone by Shimron Hetmyer’s brilliance with the bat and Romario Shepherd’s five-wicket haul, including a match-winning hat-trick that sealed the deal.

  • 18.6

OUT! CAUGHT! And it is that man again, Romario Shepherd, with an outstanding catch. Slower one, around off, Mark Watt goes for a wild swing at it, gets it edged and the ball is flying to the left of the fielder at short third. Romario Shepherd glides to his left, puts in a dive and grabs hold of it. West Indies win by 35 runs.

  • 18.5

Good length on the pads, Brad Currie tucks this to short fine leg for a single.

  • 18.4

WIDE! Full and wide down the leg. Wided.

  • 18.3

Short and on off, Mark Watt shuffles across and hits this off his gloves to the left of Romario Shepherd at short fine leg for one.

  • 18.2

FOUR! Another one goes for a boundary down the ground. Good length on middle and off, Mark Watt pumps this right behind the bowler for a boundary in front of the sight screen this time.

  • 18.1

FOUR! Some joy for Watt. Pitched up, around off, Mark Watt gets right behind the line of it and lofts it up and over the fielder at the mid off region for a boundary.

  • 17.6

Good length, around off, Mark Watt pushes at it away from the body and gets it edged off the outside to the third man region for a run.

  • 17.5

Yorker, on off, Mark Watt jams this out. A smirk from Shamar Joseph at the batter.

  • 17.4

Back of a length, angling back into the batter. Mark Watt hops up on his toes and keeps it out to the right of the bowler.

  • 17.3

Good length on off, Brad Currie punts this down to long on for a run.

  • 17.2

Hard length, on top of off. Brad Currie jumps up on his toes and blocks this around short leg.

  • 17.1

Wide yorker, on off, Mark Watt opens the face of his bat and guides this to deep third for a run.

  • .

Brad Currie is the last man in.

  • 16.6

OUT! CAUGHT! Fifer for Romario Shepherd on the opening day. On a length around off, Safyaan Sharif looks for the lofted drive and ends up chipping this straight into the hands of Jason Holder at the mid off region. Holder makes no mistake and holds onto it. Four wickets in this over, and the Windies can see the finish line now.

  • 16.5

Back of a length around off, Safyaan Sharif guides this to point.

  • .

Absolute scenes in the City of Joy, Kolkata. Romario Shepherd has taken a T20 World Cup hat-trick, and no one seems to catch him as he is running off in celebration. The crowd loves it as well. Also, Safyaan Sharif comes out to the middle now.

  • 16.4

OUT! TIMBERRR!!! Romario Shepherd has picked up a hat-trick. He comes around the stumps, hits the nagging length, angling it back into the batter on off. Oliver Davidson pokes at it away from his body without any kind of footwork. The ball beats the bat on the inside and clatters into the off-pole. The off-pole does a cartwheel and the Windies celebrate wildly as Romario Shepherd completes his hat-trick.

  • .

Who faces the hat-trick ball? It will be the debutant, Oliver Davidson.

  • 16.3

OUT! CAUGHT! Two-in-two for Romario Shepherd as Michael Leask departs for a golden duck. On a length wide of off, Michael Leask looks to go big and slogs at it. Gets it away off the cue end of his bat and the ball travels towards the cow corner region. Rovman Powell runs to his right from long on and grabs hold of it. He lands on his shoulder and looks in a bit of pain, but gets up quickly and looks fortuantely is fine. Romario Shepherd will be on a hat-trick.

  • .

West Indies are strengthening their grip on this contest. Michael Leask is the next man in.

  • 16.2

OUT! CAUGHT! Slower one, wide and full outside off, Matthew Cross plays it straight into the hands of Sherfane Rutherford at backward point. Rutherford was positioned around that region exactly for this stroke.
